AN UPDATE FROM CASUA

“Welcome to the 2023 season. We realize it’s only the middle of January, but executive members of the CASUA have been busy for the past number of weeks preparing for the upcoming season.”

ARE YOU RETURNING?

We want to get an idea of how many umpires are returning from last year’s crew. If you are returning, let us know. If you aren’t returning, please tell us why. If you haven’t decided, let us know what factors are impacting your decision, so we can try and help. Please fill out this form on the CASUA website or email [email protected].

BACKGROUND SCREENING:

A reminder to all adult umpires (18 years and older) of the requirement to complete Background Screening to be eligible to umpire. Previously, this was only a CASUA requirement, but in 2023 it will be an ASUA requirement. All adult umpires will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector) that will be good for five years or complete a declaration in seasons where a CRC is not required. Check the CASUA website for details, including a letter that should help get the costs of the CRC waived.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BECOME AN UMPIRE?

If you know anyone interested in umpiring, please get them in contact with us. The best way is to have them send an email to [email protected]. We will then contact them to provide information and answer any questions they may have.

CLINICS

Three clinic dates have been confirmed. Umpires need to attend one of these clinic dates. Exact times and other details will be shared closer to the dates. They will focus on mechanics, but with some theory included. Confirmed dates are:

  • Saturday, April 15 – Red Deer, Pidherney Curling Centre
  • Sunday, April 16 – New Norway, Curling Club
  • Saturday, April 29 – Castor (location TBA)

In the meantime, you can start preparing for the season. Your rule book is still good for this year, as is the mechanics manual. It’s never too early to start reviewing the rules and mechanics.

FEES

Registration fees for the 2023 season have been set. They are a little higher than last year, as we return to a more traditional clinic format, and due to a $10 increase implemented by Softball Alberta for umpire registrations. But overall, fees are lower than 2019, thanks to some hard work to keep costs as low as possible. Please note that if Softball Alberta decides not to implement its increase, we will adjust our fees accordingly.

  • First Year/ Level 1: $110
  • Level 2: $130
  • Level 3: $140
  • Level 4: $150

RAMP ASSIGNING AND REGISTRATION

We will be using the RAMP assigning platform again for the 2023 season for assigning minor league play, and women’s and men’s leagues in the central Alberta area, as well as for identifying umpires available to work tournaments during the regular season and provincials.

We will have a new Assignor this year, as Lisa Lemasurier has retired from the assignor role. We extend our sincere thanks to Lisa for her thousands of hours of work the past few seasons. More information on the new assignor will be shared at the clinic.

We will also be using the RAMP registration platform for our ASUA and Softball Alberta registration. Once we have more details, we will update you, but the registration platform is not yet open for registration.
